New Publication | International Law: An Infrastructural Turn Amidst Postcolonial Worldmaking

The ILA Committee on Urbanisation and International Law – Potential & Pitfalls is delighted to highlight a new publication by its two Chairs, Helmut P. Aust and Janne E. Nijman: International Law: An Infrastructural Turn Amidst Postcolonial Worldmaking.
Published in the De Gruyter Handbook of Cities, Infrastructure and International Relations (edited by Michele Acuto , Simon Curtis , Ian Klaus and Gaea Morales), the chapter explores the growing importance of infrastructure as a lens for understanding international law and global political relations.
“we see a shared challenge for International Law and IR scholarship: core concepts need to be urbanised, with due consideration for the Eurocentric underpinnings of these concepts. We exemplify this conceptual point with the turn to infrastructures as a concrete example with a view to deepening our understanding of the interdependency of the local and the global dimensions of postcolonial worldmaking.”
This contribution also resonates strongly with the Committee’s ongoing work on the multiple ways in which urbanisation is transforming—and being transformed by—the international legal order. Read the chapter here: https://www.degruyterbrill.com/de/document/doi/10.1515/9783111405087-006/html
