New Publication | Cities and Environmental Sustainability: An International Law Perspective

The ILA Committee on Urbanisation and International Law – Potential & Pitfalls is pleased to highlight the publication of Cities and Environmental Sustainability: An International Law Perspective by Mirko Sossai, one of the Committee’s Co-Rapporteurs.
Published in the open-access volume Environment Sustainability as a Protected Collective Interest in International and EU Law, edited by Giuseppe Palmisano, the chapter examines the growing relationship between cities and international environmental law.
It explores three key dimensions of this relationship: the role of cities in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 11; cities as laboratories of environmental governance, developing innovative responses to climate change and environmental risks; and the emergence of urban collective interests at the intersection of environmental protection, climate risks and human rights.
The chapter situates these developments within the broader transformation of international environmental governance, highlighting the increasingly polycentric and multi-level role of cities in implementing and potentially shaping international sustainability norms.
